Overview
Education is not only a human right, but also one of the most important needs of partner countries. Education is the foundation for fostering human potential and represents an important investment for the development of the human resources that are essential for achieving sustainable economic and social development.
Education is not only related to equality, justice and human respect, it is also closely connected to health, protection of children, and the eradication of HIV/AIDS. Furthermore, education allows for the redistribution of income by expanding the scope of opportunities.

According to a 2002 UNESCO report, more than 860 million adults are illiterate and 120 million school-aged children are deprived of educational opportunities. Although the importance of education for national and social development is emphasized, conditions remain miserable.

To help achieve the MDG targets related to education, KOICA is focusing its efforts on primary education and vocational training. By doing so, KOICA is helping to ensure primary education for all school-aged children (Goal 2) and create work opportunities for young adults in the developing world (Goal 8, Target 16).

Specifically, KOICA is helping to construct school buildings and facilities to support primary education, develop appropriate curriculums, provide textbooks and school supplies, build vocational training centers, share know-how on managing vocational training centers, and establish a skills certification system in order to nurture skilled workers and provide employment opportunities.
