KOICA Holds Opening & Handover Ceremony of the Fisheries Training

Complex in Solomon Islands

Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) Fiji Office and the Solomon Islands National University (SINU) held a opening and handover ceremony to mark the opening of the new department of fisheries at the SINU in Ranadi Campus on December 6, 2017.

Despite the abundance of fisheries resources, most countries in the South Pacific including the Solomon Islands have a lack of universities that can provide higher education in fisheries area as well as a lack of professional human resources for the industrialization of fisheries.

In order to solve the following problems and difficulties, KOICA has supported establishing the new department of fisheries in SINU and founded a comprehensive infrastructure for education and research in fisheries from 2014 to 2017. KOICA established the New Fisheries Training Complex for experiment and research that can contribute to the better management of resources and marine products and improvement of necessary skills.

Through the current project, the new department of fisheries is expected to serve as a base station in nurturing professional human resources that are able to cope with climate change issues in the future.
