The recruitment of volunteers is carried out by the collected requests through the offices of the KOICA to the organizations wishing to volunteers.
After verification and sorting, the KOICA Office in Ghana sends the request to KOICA Headquarters which in turn recruits a volunteer to meet the needs of the organization in accordance with the descriptions of the request.
To achieve this, it is imperative that the organization ensures the accuracy of the request; the volunteer makes the decision to apply for the position having seen the request that is submitted to KOICA to be advertised.
It should also be noted that, requesting for volunteers do not always guarantee that one will be found, as this largely depends on finding a volunteer that matches the profile being requested by the organization.
Training in Korea
After recruitment of a volunteer, the recruit undergoes training in Korea for about a month. During this period, the volunteer follows various training courses which will serve as an asset for his volunteer mission such as English language course, training on international cooperation and training in the field of volunteering. At the end of this training, the volunteer is dispatched to Ghana office for further training.
Training in Ghana
When volunteers safely arrive in Ghana, the KOICA Ghana Office offers them some orientation and continues with the training. The training for volunteers usually covers areas on safety measures, culture, language and how to live in Ghana harmoniously. Volunteers further get training on the projects and programs being implemented by the Ghana Office as well as studying the English language.
On the Job Training
As one of the Training programs in Ghana, the new volunteers participate in 'On The Job Training'(OJT) for a week. The volunteers are expected to face Ghanaian custom, culture, tradition, etc. which they have never experienced in Korea. To deal with the challenges, OJT is helpful for the volunteers not to struggle on the unfamiliar environment. The purposes of OJT are :
To lead the volunteer to familiarize with his or her role at the workplace and to learn to perform and cope with the various tasks and duties that he/she will be assigned to
To lead the volunteer to familiarize with his or her co-workers and to build cordial working relationships
To lead the volunteer to familiarize and adapt to his or her new living environments and conditions.
Accommodation
The receiving organization assists the volunteer to identify suitable areas to rent and live for the rest of their stay in Ghana. KOICA also entreats the receiving organization to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our volunteers, especially when assisting the volunteer to find accommodation.
