Unlock Literacy (World Vision)
This project is an education program which has been implemented in Eastern Region since 2016. The first phase of the project was implemented in Fantaekwa district from 2016 to 2018. The project aimed at complementing the quality of public education that could lead to the development of human resources. The project focused on four main objectives, which were strengthening classroom literacy instructing through teacher training, strengthening local education authorities’ teacher supervision capacity and teacher supporting mechanism, enhancing communities and parents-led child reading activities, and improving children’s reading skills and interests. Following its successful first phase (2016-2018), the second phase is being implemented from 2019 to 2021 in Afram Plains with a budget of approximately KRW 18.82 billion (of which 15 billion is funded by KOICA). The standardized Unlock Literacy Model, will be used for the balanced development of letter knowledge, phonemic awareness, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension of the children.
Capacity Building of Female Professionals in Ghana
Based on the prime goal to whip up female interest and enthusiasm in electronics as well as eradicating the misconception of females in the Electronics field, KOICA Ghana in collaboration with GIZ, SAMSUNG Electronics and COTVET (Government Partner) initiated the Female Professionals in Electronics (FPE) program with the intent to educate, equip and build female capacity in electronics. Each of the partners contributed USD 500.000.00 adding up to make the project budget of USD1.5million. The FPE program is designed to give approximately 300 female students (within the project lifespan of 3years) the opportunity to become professionals in Electronics under a scholarship scheme in four (4) selected vocational schools namely; the Don Bosco Technical Institute (DBTI), Accra Girls Vocational Institute AGVI, the Pentecost Vocational Training Center (PVTI) and CYO Technical–Vocational Institute in Sovie, (Volta Region). Electronic laboratories in all 4 schools were installed and fully furnished and are currently in use in all four schools, helping to make practicable what they study in theory. All generic and practical instructors involved in the project received the necessary introduction into teaching in mode Competency Based Training (CBT). The training is mandatory for the accreditation of the schools with COTVET. - 88 out of the first cohort of 120 students who enrolled have graduated successfully and achieved the required learning outcomes. - First cohort of students have been trained in the basics of mobile phone repairs and maintenance, training is scheduled for the second cohort of students. - Students have had the opportunity to intern in various electronics outlets in Greater Accra to have hands - on knowledge in the sector and also to prepare them for the world of work. 25 graduates have been employed by various SAMSUNG outlets in Accra. - The project continues to provide school fees subsidy for existing students and will provide need-based scholarships for new students to be enrolled. 170 students have benefitted from school fees subsidy and about 50 more continuous to benefit from the school fees subsidy.
