9th May, the Record of Discussion signing ceremony for a project, ‘Support to The Establishment of a Sustainable UXO Sector in Lao PDR’, has been held in the guesthouse of the Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare(MoLSW). The event was attended by several officials including Mr. Moohong IM, the ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Laos, Mr. Padeumohine SONTHANY, Deputy Minister of MoLSW, Ms. Myungjin KIM, Country Director of the KOICA Office in Lao PDR, Ms. Ricarda RIEGER, UNDP Resident Representative in Lao PDR.

The project is a third UXO sector project which KOICA implements in Lao PDR. Removal of UXO is one of the most important issues in Lao PDR. KOICA carried out many activities such as promoting new UXO removal teams, strengthening the capacity of National Regulatory Authority, and UXO risk education for villagers. Especially, this third project focuses on securing sustainable UXO removal capacity through expanding Humanitarian Lao Army teams from 7 to 20.

Ambassador Moohong IM said ‘I am confident in continuing cooperation between Korea and Lao PDR will contribute to achieving SDGs 18 of Laos, ‘safe life from UXO’ in the future’ through his speech.
