In 2008, KOICA opened her regional office in Abuja, covering Nigeria, Liberia and Sierra Leone. The office implements variousprojects in Governance, Education, Vocation, Agriculture, Human Resources, and emergency response.
KOICA, established in 1991, is the government agency responsible for South Korea's foreign grant aid programs to promote friendship and mutual exchange with developing countries and contribute to international cooperation by supporting the economic and social development of partner countries. KOICA Myanmar Office in Yangon, opened in 2001, has been carrying out a number of projects focusing on regional development, public administration, transportation, and energy to achieve poverty eradication and prosperity for the people through inclusive growth of Myanmar. Moreover, we actively contribute to human resource exchange and knowledge sharing between South Korea and Myanmar by sending dozens of Myanmar government officials to Korea every year for invitational trainings, and dispatch human resource to volunteer programs and advisory groups.

With a variety of beautiful nicknames - Land of Golden Pagodas, Land of Smiles, and the Last Jewel of Asia - Myanmar has significant growth potential based on diverse natural environment, ethnic diversity, abundant natural resources, young and talented human resource along with vast territory which is three times larger than the size of the Korean peninsula.
Myanmar is a core partner country of the Korean government within the development cooperation field, and also an important partner in terms of Korea’s New Southern Policy Initiative in various areas including politics, economy, society, and culture.
KOICA has been contributing to enhance economic and social development as well as welfare in Myanmar through various forms of development cooperation projects since its establishment, and to promote friendship and cooperation between Korea and Myanmar. KOICA has been supporting the development of Myanmar focusing on regional development, public administration, transportation, and energy to support the implementation of Myanmar Sustainable Development Plan (MSDP) and Development Assistance Policy (DAP) in accordance with Myanmar's Country Partnership Strategy (CPS) of the Korean government.
Current major projects include the “Rural Community Development” supporting the Myanmar government's introduction to rural development policies and poverty eradication in rural villages, the “Vocational Skill Educator Training School Construction”, the “Legal Information System Establishment” to realize Rule of Law, and the “Myanmar Development Institute (MDI) Establishment” which will function as the policy think tank for economic and social development sectors.
As South Korea developed democracy and human rights along with economic growth, KOICA will support Myanmar achieve democratization and sustainable economic growth together, and make further efforts to promote development cooperation projects realizing core values of peace, democracy, and human rights which are universal values of humanity.
